Fannie Nesbit

July 29, 1934 — May 15, 2015

Fannie Frances Neely Nesbit departed this life on Friday, May 15, 2015 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Throughout her life, even in illness, she was the picture of courage and grace. Fan was born the youngest of eight children to the late James Cicero Neely and Susie Bell Johnson Neely on July 29, 1934. She was raised and educated in Athens, Georgia. Early in her life, she learned the value of education and exceeded at every level. Fan graduated as Valedictorian from Athens High and Industrial School in 1949, with honors from Clark College (now Clark-Atlanta University) with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Home Economics and with honors from Penn State University with a Master's Degree in General Home Economics. Her exemplary career in Education spanned more than 35 years in both Georgia and Texas. She was baptized at an early age at Hill First Baptist Church. Upon locating to San Antonio, TX, Fan united with Hope Presbyterian Church where she was an active and faithful member as well as an ordained Elder. Upon returning to Athens, Central Presbyterian Church became Fan's church home where she was active in Presbyterian Women, Church School, Bible Study, Senior's ministry and Central's Sewing ministry. Fan was a community activist and held memberships in Church Women United, Athens Area Retired Teachers Association and the Beta Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She was a consummate home economist, an avid reader, a stylish dresser and a critical thinker on a broad range of topics. She loved her family dearly and leaves to cherish her memory: One sister, Freddie N. Bush (Robert, Sr.), Detroit, MI; her beloved "grands" whom she helped to raise, Dr. Tonya Hudson, Charlotte, NC and Sean Hudson (Karen), Maplewood, NJ; Nephews and Nieces, Dr. Michael Harris (Sylvia), Atlanta, GA, Dr. Farris T. Johnson, Jr. (Erin), Maxine Heard, Ralph Johnson (Floretta), all of Athens, GA, Randall Bush and Suzette Bush-Goddard, Detroit, MI; Godson, Dwayne Charles, Atlanta, GA and a host of grand nieces and nephews, great-grand nephews, cousins and friends. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, May 22, 2015, at Central Presbyterian Church with interment in Evergreen Memorial Park.
