Eleanor Carithers was born on November 6, 1940 to the late Alfred and Joe (correctly spelled even though she is female) Houston in Sarasota, Florida. She was raised in Sarastoa and graduated from Booker High School. She graduated from Tennessee State University in 1962 with a Bachelors in Elementary Education. She later attended Atlanta University and obtained a Master's Degree in Special Education.
She began her teaching career in her hometown, and also taught in Atlanta, GA, Tuskegee, AL and retired from Clarke County Schools in 1995 after 33 years of teaching. During her career she taught Elementary, Middle and High School levels. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year before retiring from Burney Harris-Lyons Middle School.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Douglas Carithers. They were married on January 20, 1972, and to this union were born 2 daughters, Keisha Anika and Sherri Nichole.
Eleanor was a skilled seamstress and had a knack with flowers making dresses to drapes and keeping a home full of beautiful flowers inside and out. She fulfilled one of her dreams of owning a dress store, Eleanor's Fashions & Alterations and was a backbone supporter of the successful Carithers Barbeque. She was a chartering Mom of the Athens Area Chapter of Jack and Jill of America and a member of the Bon Bons. She was an advent sports fan and loved the Atlanta Braves, Falcons, Hawks and the Georgia Bulldogs.
She was preceded in death by her brother Nathaniel Houston, step children, Derrick Ware and Delridge Hanks.
She leaves to cherish her memories and continue in her legacy, her daughters, Keisha (Leroy) Ryals, Watkinsville, GA, Dr. Sherri (William) Boney, Covington, GA, step-daughter, Tangela Jones, Irmo, SC, a sister Frankie Collier, Sarasota, FL, a brother Alfred Houston (Nona), Fayetteville, GA, grandchildren Donnetta Hanks, Myles Ware, Elease Ryals, Chantel Boney, Jasmyne Boney, Aliyah Ryals, and TaQuesha Ryals.
